My Partner Needs to Hear It,
But I’m Not a Words Person.

September 15, 2026

A cluttered corkboard of handwritten love notes, the center one reading “I love you,” surrounded by smaller notes like “thinking of you” and “you’ve got this,” pinned with terracotta and clay pushpins

“My partner needs to hear it, but I’m just not a words person. Every time I try, it feels so cringe. How do I get better at this?”

Hi! First off, you’re not alone! Whether you grew up in a family that didn’t express love, it feels too vulnerable, or you just can’t find the words, a lot of people have a hard time saying I love you. But just like any other skill, it’s a muscle you can build!

And it matters! For someone whose love language is words of affirmation, actions don’t substitute for words. You can do everything else right and your partner can still feel something’s missing, not because your effort doesn’t count, but because they’re listening for a signal that only shows up in words.

So take the pressure off. You don’t need poetry. Plain and short and said often beats eloquent and rare, and a simple “I love you” or “I appreciate you” does something measurable in the person hearing it, a real lift in the same bonding hormone released by touch.

Go ahead and try it! The tenth time will feel nothing like the first. Cringe fades with repetition. Silence doesn’t fade with anything.

P.S. Building a new skill goes easier with a hand up. That’s what LoveTags is here for.
